British Shorthair Cat Breed

dark British Shorthair breed of cat

The British Shorthair, probably the oldest English breed of cat, traces its ancestry back to the domestic cat of Rome. This breed was first prized for its physical strength and hunting ability, but soon became equally recognized and valued for its calm demeanor, endurance and loyalty to man. The British Shorthair is a comparatively rare cat in the United States. Around 1980 it was recognized for championship competition by CFA stimulating much needed interest in the breed. Recognized world-wide, many fine “Brits” are still imported today from England, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia to help widen the gene pool for breeders in the United States.

The blue variety of the British Shorthair is among the most favored of all shorthair domestic house cats. As early as 1911, a British Blue was awarded the much sought after trophy for best in show, which on the European continent was exclusively reserved for Persians or Siamese. Through crossbreeding with the Persians, the British Shorthair developed a fuller body and head and became the cobby cat that is favored today.

The British Shorthair domestic house cat is an all round problem free cat. This breed of cat is friendly, cuddly, robust and gets along well with other cats and pets in the home. British Shorthair cats love children, seldom whines and is ready to play at any time. This domestic house cat is also happy curling up in your lap and watching a little TV. Although domestic British shorthair cats don't need the outside, they do require a fair amount of space indoors, since this cat will often chase her imaginary prey with gusto and surprising agility.
