Everyone knows that domestic house cats come in many different sizes, shapes, colors and body structures. Whenever a certain characteristic, such as long hair or markings, is passed down to the next generation of domestic house cats, then a new breed of cats has developed. There are two main cat associations that decide if these special characteristics are strong enough to classify them as a new breed of domestic house cat. They are the International Cat Association, called TICA for short, and the Cat Fanciers Association or CFA for short. Both organizations attempt to cooperate with each other in order to eliminate possible confusion about breeds and their particular characteristics.

The International Cat Association (TICA) is the largest cat breed organization in Europe and it has members and clubs in Latin America, North America, Asia, Europe and Africa and continues to grow all around the world. TICA recognizes fifty-five breeds of cats for championship competition - from the regal Siamese, exotic Bengal and exquisite Persian, to newer breeds including the Savannah, Kurilian Bobtail and Thai. TICA also is the world's largest registry of household pet cats and kittens. Household pet cats and kittens adopted from shelters or rescued off the street, compete for titles and international and regional awards, just like pedigreed cats.

The Cat Fanciers' Association is a non-profit organization founded in 1906. The Cat Fanciers' Association, Inc. is the largest registry of purebred cats in the world. For purposes of registration, CFA has arbitrarily divided cats into the following groups: Natural, Hybrid, Established and Mutant breeds. Since the British cat fancy has been established long before that of the American, the artificial boundaries of four large groups was necessary to encompass those breeds present and those to come in the future. It should also be pointed out that registration rules need not also follow the laws of genetics. CFA recognizes 40 pedigreed breeds for showing in the Championship Class, and 1 breed as Provisional.
