Cat Training

Domestic house cats are accomplished at training themselves but when your house cat develops negative behaviors you will need to have a plan. Be sure to choose a name for your domestic house cat as soon as possible. Call your cat by name when it is walking toward you, when you feed it, and when your greet your domestic house cat first thing in the morning. Once the cat has learned to recognize it's name, you can begin to use a few simple one word commands. Commands such as "NO", "DOWN", and "OUT" will be understood by your house cat when used in a consistant manner and said in a firm voice. Always reward your domestic house cat with  praise and affection, along with an occasional treat. Never inflict pain on your domestic house cat, especially when trying to train the cat.

For negative behavior such clawing furniture or climbing curtains, you may want to have some supplies readily available to distract your cat. A plant sprayer filled with water is a simple way to get instant results from your house cat. Whatever the cat is doing when he is misted with water, he will quickly stop. You may also try tossing a small beanbag near the domestic house cat when he is displaying negative behavior. Traps can be set for your cat when you are away. If your cat keeps getting into the laundry leave an overfilled water balloon under a shirt in the basket, and when the cat inadvertently pops the balloon he will be quick to leave the area. To keep cats from digging up your house plants, add mothballs to the soil. The smell will guarantee the safety of your plants.

Domestic house cats often bring home mice and birds as shown at House Cats Central

Cats are natural hunters and may bring home some dead mice or birds. Do not attempt to discipline your domestic house cat for this behavior, since it will not do any good and will only confuse the cat. Instead show no emotion at all and dispose of the body when the cat is not around. Some domestic house cats love to suck wool. In some Siamese cats this is an inherited tendency, while some cats may suck wool as a sign they were weaned too early from their mothers. Try peppering your wool items or adding other scents that your cat does not like to keep them away from the wool.

Litter training your cat: Domestic house cats are innately trained to use a litter box and most prefer the box to be placed in a quiet, private area. Young cats should be placed in the litter box after eating and a few times throughout the day and they will quickly learn to use the box on their own. For cats who have done their business outside of the box, try placing aluminum foil where the cat did his business. Cats do not like walking on foil and your domestic house cat will soon return to the litter box.
